Harvest 101
Last season's Saturday morning vineyard walking tours with viticulturist Steve McIntyre proved to be fun, educational and tasty. Included in the tours were wine tasting and lunch at his family's estate vineyard and winery site located in the Santa Lucia Highlands near Gonzales. Attendees observed ultra premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes maturing during the beautiful morning setting. They learned how quality winemakers determine when it's time to harvest. They sampled vine-ripened berries, skins and seeds, measured brix, Ph and total acidity and tried to determine whether the varietals had reached their pinnacle of ripeness. The groups engaged in lively discussions about sustainable farming practices and environmental stewardship with Steve and his team of seasoned professionals, a team that supplies fastidiously grown grapes to many of the state's top wineries. Of course, everyone tasted the unreleased wines like McIntyre Estate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sparkling and relished the simple, yet fulfilling lunch among the vines.
